Session 003

The group has rescued Magnus. Upon the discovery of the king’s cell Pollax, Balasar and Castor happened upon another lost soul by the name of Thaddeus, a tiefling warlock. Armed with Eldritch powers and a certain sense of vulgarity about him, he has agreed to join the party’s quest for fame and gold.

During the rescue, the adventurers did battle with several goblins and a Troll. Castor was able to inform the group of the proper way to kill a troll with his unnaturally high knowledge of Trolls and their migratory habits. Within a few minutes the group had silenced all monsters in the Tower.

Bidding Costner, the guardian of the tower adieu, they PCs returned to Emneth to claim their reward. After some shrewd negotiations on Thaddeus’ part, the group was rewarded 65gp each for his rescue. The king asked them to carry an important parcel to Aalden to deliver it to Conrad Drake, a name none of them have heard before. Magnus assures them that Conrad will locate them if they can get to the Ruddy Knave, a tavern they are all-too familiar with.

Session 002

Session two began with the brothers Angerthirst awaking in their rooms at the inn to a knock at the door. A messenger from Enigk had come to alert the party that they each have a bundle of supplies and foodstuffs waiting for them downstairs.

Castor collected Balasar and the party met up outside the inn. Using the directions given to them by Enigk and the innkeeper, they struck out in search of the tower. Upon arrival at the tower, the party explored the grounds cautiously.

The tower stands about 40’ tall and constructed of black stone. To the right hand side of the tower there is a six foot tall stone and concrete wall surrounding a small cemetery of six or eight headstones. Balasar entered the cemetery and kicked the dirt around, weapon drawn.

Around this time, Castor noticed that over the entrance to the tower was an inscription carved into the stone in common. After clearing the cobwebs and dirt away he read it aloud: “Our freedom we entrust to the Guardians.” Satisfied that the area was clear, the group entered the tower.

The group heads into the tower and down the stairs, making a fair bit of noise. Inside the dungeon the group heard screaming and rescued a young man who had been captured by the goblins and imprisoned in the dungeon. After battling off a few goblins led by a nasty skull-thumping bugbear, the group came across a room with three pathways, each one leading in a new direction.

The group chose to go explore the left path first. Following a torch-lit hallway, the adventurers came across a door that was barred shut with a heavy timber. A message was carved into the wooden beam rather hastily in goblin, it read: “Keep Out.” Castor, the only speaker of goblin in the party read it aloud to the group who shrugged and immediately began to remove the timber in order to gain entry to the room.

After removing the timber the door still wouldn’t budge. Balasar threw his weight at it, but was unable to break it down. Castor and Pollax charged the door together and the wood splintered away from the heavy iron hinges. A heavy table had been pushed up against the door from the inside.

Once inside the group finds that it was once an alchemists study. The entire room has been burned and is charred and blackened throughout. Piles of books and tattered paper cover the floor. Balasar, who is ever-vigilant, noticed with his keen dragonborn-eyes a weak floor that supported an alchemists desk. Wanting to trip the trap, he threw the door (as it was now broken off its hinges and laying in teh room) on the desk which immediately crashed through the floor with a clattering ruckus.

There is a room adjacent to the alchemist’s study. Here the group encountered Costner, the last of the Guardians, a group of warforged guards who were animated to defend the prison and keep it free of monsters who might make use of it as a sanctuary of evil. He tells the party that humans had helped the goblins to hunt down and kill the other guardians who had survived the 200 years since the Great War with him in the dungeon. He is the last of his kind and the goblins have closed him off in east wing of the prison to prevent him from killing them one by one. He tells the party that he has a suit of magical armor that will help them on their journey. He informs them it was in the desk that now resides at the bottom of the newly formed 10’ deep pit of the study. Balasar volunteers to hop down into the pit and retrieve the armor.

Balasar is attacked by a great snake while tossing up pieces of the armor one by one. Costner and the group killed it but not without some trouble. The snake managed to poison half the members of the party.

Costner offers to keep watch over the group if they need a place to rest. He gestures to a line of about a dozen goblin skulls that rest on a charred and burned bookshelf behind him and informs them that the goblins never come here because they are afraid of him.

The charismatic and diplomatic Balasar asks Costner if he would accompany the group farther into the dungeon, citing that they both desire the same thing: that the monsters be removed from the dungeon. With a certain amount of reluctance, he agrees.

The group takes an extended rest and Costner (who needs no sleep) keeps watch over the heroes.

Session 001 (9/20/2008)
From Aalden to Emneth

The Angerthirst brothers found themselves in one of the taverns in the crime-ridden city of Aalden called The Ruddy Knave. The tavern was extremely busy so the serving wench seated a dragonborn stranger at their table due to overcrowding. The brothers were displeased at first, but the dragonborn, named Balasar, proved helpful when a group of thugs picked a fight with the three of them later that evening.

The three were hauled off to jail without a chance to explain that they were attacked at random. Awoken the next day, a guard named Gregory escorted them to the outskirts of the city, harassing them all the way. The three were informed that they would be killed if they were discovered in Aalden again. En route to the city gates, a nervous little man wearing crimson robes handed Balasar a note, which turned out to be a request for help from a certain King Magnus of a town called Emneth. The note included a map to show our heroes the way.

The group decided to accept the challenge, and prospect of gold and adventure by heading to Emneth which is a few days journey along the North Highway from Aalden. After a quiet three days they approached Emneth in the early evening. As they drew nearer to the city, they noticed that the gate was closed and Emneth appeared to be on high security alert with patrols circling the city walls. They are met by the captain of the guard, named Enigk and one such patrol.

After a short discussion about the party’s intentions Enigk invites the group into Emneth with the intention of outfitting them to venture into the centuries abandoned tower to the East of Emneth. As the gate is being raised a band of goblins led by two powerful bugbears attacks the guard and the heroes. Enigk’s lost three of his four soldiers, but the heroes, Enigk and his remaining mage survive and head into the city as the summer sun sets on the cold stone walls of Emneth.
